What is CBN Oil?
CBN stands for cannabinol, and like it’s cousin CBD comes from the cannabis plant. It was the first naturally occurring cannabinoid that was isolated in its pure form.
There are no strains of cannabis that contain high levels of CBN.
That is because of the way CBN is created. It is a product of oxidization of THC, and not a stand alone cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant.
Instead, most manufacturers expose THC to heat and light, which breaks it down and leaves CBN as a byproduct.
According to Medical News Today:
“CBN is a result of processes within the plant. There is no way to produce a high-CBN strain of cannabis, and the amount depends on different factors, such as the levels of THC in the flowers and its exposure to elements such as light, heat, and time.”
CBN vs CBD
Wondering what is the difference between CBD and CBN, we’re here to help.
Besides THC, CBD is the second most copious cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant.
There are even some hemp strains that are extremely high in the amount of CBD.
CBN on the other hand is the result of processing THC. It is not a naturally occurring chemical found in the plant itself. CBN on its own, will not get you high.
Both interact with the endocannabinoid system in our bodies. The ECS is responsible for maintaining homeostasis in our bodies. What that means is this system is responsible for regulating our natural bodily functions.
It is present almost everywhere in our human bodies, and functions by helping our body to maintain a status quo. It is the most understudied system, but that is changing rapidly.
CBN effects
It is important to note here that any effects of CBN are currently lacking research. More large scale studies need to be done in order to truly understand what good CBN can do.
However, the small studies that have been completed point to CBN as having a positive effect as an:
- Anti-convulsant
- Anti-inflammatory
- Antibiotic
That’s extremely exciting and we cannot wait to see what this CBN hemp compound can do.
Benefits of CBN
The FDA has not approved CBN for any medical uses thus far. Therefore, any touted benefits are not guaranteed. That’s not stopping people from claiming that CBN cannabinoid benefits exist.
Similar to CBD, each of our bodies will respond differently to anything we put in it. We are all unique individuals.
That being said, some of the benefits of CBN being studied include:
- Anti-Inflammatory – some studies have linked CBN as shown to reduce arthritis in rats. While exciting, more human studies on a larger scale need to be done.
- Antibacterial – in lab settings, researchers discovered that CBN can be a potent antibacterial agent against resistant strains of MRSA.
- Neuroprotectant – while human studies still need to be completed, researchers have discovered that CBN has the potential to delay the onset of ALS in rodents. This suggests CBN might be useful in our fight against neurodegenerative diseases.
- Increases Appetite – Similar to THC, some studies have discovered that CBN acts as an appetite stimulant in rats.
- Glaucoma – we all know by now that weed and specifically THC, has been used to help those of us suffering from glaucoma. Recent small scale studies have also found that CBN can help reduce intraocular pressure, which is one of the biggest causes of glaucoma.
CBN oil for slumber
There’s a popular notion that CBN will help you rest. It is being used with more frequency as a CBN slumber aid.
As a matter of fact, a recent review of studies by Steep Hill Labs discovered that 2.5 to 5mg dose of CBN was as effective in aiding us slumber as a 5 to 10mg dose of diazepam.
That would be pretty cool.
That’s also partly why you see most of the CBN products in the marketplace claim that it is the relaxation cannabinoid.
However, there are some studies that also suggest that CBN has zero sedative effects. So why the discrepancy?
Remember that CBN is formed by aging or exposing THC to light and heat. By processing cannabis in such a way, the monoterpenoids will evaporate and leave only the more sedating oxygenated sesquiterpenoids behind.
This can potentially explain why people associate such strong sedating effects with CBN.
